About

The Peoria Civic Ballet Company was founded in 1965 by Peoria’s Jack Slater and Shirley Pizer. Its first performance was in April 1966 at the Shrine Mosque Theater (now Riverside Community Church). The Peoria Civic Ballet Academy was founded by Marc Ligon in 1976. For a time based at Illinois Central College, the Ballet later moved into the historic GAR building on Hamilton Avenue. It had one other home in the Pioneer Park area before developing its current studio on Detweiller Drive. Our annual performance of “The Nutcracker” has become a holiday tradition for many people in the Peoria area. Annually, over 3,000 school children attend our special school performances of “The Nutcracker” and our spring ballet. In the 2012 performance year, we were awarded the Arts in Education Award for Excellence in promoting the art of dance. Our spring ballet performances have included both classic ballets and contemporary favorites.
